UP chairman among two shot dead in Comilla

A Union Parishad chairman and his relative were shot dead in Daudkandi upazila, Comilla Tuesday morning. The victims are Jiarkandi UP chairman and also Titas upazila Jubo League joint convenor Monir Hossain, 45, and his brother-in-law Mohiuddin, 30. Three others injured in the attack are Md Oli, Ismail and Sumon. They were  now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). According to witnesses, a gang of armed men attacked the car carrying Monir at Gouripur in the morning when they were going to Comilla to appear before a court. Monir's cousin Mosharraf Hossain said the assailants dragged Monir out of the car and shot him. They also shot and hacked other car passengers. Later, Monir and  Mohiuddin died on the way to DMCH. Rabiul Hasan who was in the car with Monir said: “We were six people in the car. When Monir got off the car, Julhas, a mussleman of Sohel Sikdar,  started shooting at Monir. Later, Shakil, Rasel and Ahsan joined him. I somehow managed to flee the scence.” This correspondent tried to contact with Sohel Sikdar, vice-chairman of the upzila and also organising secretary of upzila unit Awami League, but failed. The motive behind the murder remains unclear. Additional police have been deployed as a tense situation is prevailing in the area. Local sources said the killing incidents had taken place over establishing supremacy in the party and realising toll of an auto-rickshaw stand. Superintendent of Police, Comilla Md Shah Abid Hossain said no case was filed in connection with the murder, though they were trying to identify killers.
