A woman was shot dead by unknown miscreants at the residence of her daughter’s in-laws at Satkania upazila in Chittagong early Thursday.
Police recovered the body of the deceased, Anwara Begum, 38, of Brahmanbaria district and sent it to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue.
Anwara Begum came to visit her daughter’s in-laws two months ago.
Satkania police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Khaled Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune that they also nabbed three persons in connection with the murder.
He said: “Miscreants shot through the window of the house owned by Hafez Ahmed, father-in-law of Anwara’s daughter, at Shonkhola area under Eochia union of the upazila sometime between 1am and 3am. A bullet hit Anwara’s face, leaving her spot dead.”
Receiving the information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
Jashim Uddin, Rezaul Karim and Abul Kashem, who are associates of a local resident Manik were arrested subsequently.
Manik had a land dispute with Hafez Ahmed and both the parties had been fighting several court cases in this regard, added the OC.
The OC further said: “The killers might have targeted Hafez Ahmed or his family members but unfortunately Anwara was shot. We are looking into the matter.”
Earlier on January 3 night Gulchad Begum, 32, was shot dead by unknown miscreants at the upazila while an activist of Awami League, Jamal Uddin, was killed by masked miscreants at the Satkania upazila on January 2 night.
The OC said that they were increasing surveillance in the area to stop such crimes.
“Apart from tight security measures, people have to be more tolerant and conscious about social issues,” OC Khaled said.
Satkania is locally known as a hub of Jamaat-Shibir men.
