The daylong general strike of the 20-party alliance ended yesterday evening amid random acts of violence across the country, including the killing of a female school teacher.
The teacher, Shamsunnahar, died after sustaining serious injuries when pickets hurled stones at her in Noakhali in the morning.
The 37-year-old worked at the Agargaon Tawhid Laboratory School in Dhaka.
Sudharam police station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain said the woman was taken to Abdul Malik Ukil Medical College where doctors declared her dead around 10:15am.
Her husband Shahjahan Siraj was also injured, he said.
Shahjahan said pickets threw stones at him and his wife when they were at the Maijdee Municipal Bazar.
“I was transferred to Noakhali and we were moving to the district,” he added.
Apart from the teacher, a man was injured when police opened fire during a clash between BNP activists and law enforcers in Mirpur.
Ziauzzaman, officer-in-charge of Pallabi police station, said some BNP and Jamaat activists vandalised vehicles in the morning.
“They hurled stones at the police, who were then forced to charge batons and fire rubber bullets. The man was hit by bullets at the time and was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital,” he added.
Earlier, five people, including three women, were injured in Dhaka in violence perpetrated on the eve of the strike.
The strike was enforced in protest at the denial of permission to hold the Gazipur rally and to demand the release of the senior leaders of the party.
BNP leaders said they would be on the streets during the strike but none of the senior leaders were seen.
Traffic was largely unaffected by the strike but the number of private vehicles was considerably low on Dhaka streets. Buses did not run on long-haul routes but train and launch services were normal.
Crude bombs were blasted in different areas of the capital, including Dayaganj, Malibagh, Khilgaon and Green Road.
To avoid any untoward situation, the BGB was deployed at key points in the capital on Sunday night.
Police stood guard near the Nayapaltan office of the BNP and no activists were seen in the office but at least 11 people were detained in the area.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir entered the Nayapaltan office at 6am while Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Abdus Salam and some other leaders had stayed there since Sunday night.
No BNP men marched in the area in support of the strike.
But the Dhaka city BNP member secretary led a short march in Bailey Road area which was lasted only for a few minutes.
At 9:30am, Jagannath University unit of Chhatra Shibir marched in Dholaikhal and Katherpool areas and some bombs were blasted there.
Outside the capital, bombs were exploded while police and supporters of strike chased and counter-chased each other as the strike was underway.
A police vehicle came under attack in Rajshahi.
Sylhet city BNP convener Shahriar was arrested and the city unit imposed a half-day strike in Sylhet district and city for today in protest at the arrest.
In the Mahalchhari upazila of Khagrachhari, Chhatra Dal called a daylong strike in the upazila protesting vandalism of the party office.
In Gaibandha, four Chhatra Shibir activists were arrested in the Palashbari area.
Fifteen BNP activists were arrested in Bhola and another 15 in Chandpur.
The BNP acting secretary general claimed at a press briefing yesterday that the government had been trying to foil his party’s movement.
Claiming that the people had observed the strike spontaneously, Fakhrul alleged that more than 300 BNP activists were arrested and 110 were injured during the shutdown.
But the Awami League claimed that the countrymen had rejected the strike and many marched in different parts of the country protesting it.
