Cheating wife has husband killed in the capital

A travel agency businessman from the capital's Jatrabari area, who went missing four days ago, was killed at the behest of his wife over her extramarital affairs, the Detective Branch of police said yesterday.

The victim was Altaf Hossain, 45.

Detectives arrested the victim's second wife, Mousumi Akther, 21, and Mousumi's uncle, Masum, 25, for their suspected involvement in the killing.

“Based on information from the arrestees, detectives recovered the body of Altaf from Lion Forest in the National Park, under Joydebpur police station of Gazipur, on Wednesday,” Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Masudur Rahman said.

Masud said Altaf lived with his wife at Khan Bhaban in the Konapara area of Jatrabari.

On December 21 around 8:30am, the victim's younger brother, Jalal Hossain, tried to call him on his cell phone but found that it was switched off, Masud said.

Jalal later called Mousumi's cell phone but she denied knowing anything of Altaf's whereabouts. Failing to track his brother down, Jalal filed a general diary with Jatrabari police station, Masud said.

Upon receiving the complaint, DB Police Assistant Commissioner Mahmud Naser Jony started an investigation and found that Mousumi was involved in Altaf's disappearance, Masud said.

“The DB, upon getting the evidence, arrested Mousumi and her uncle Masum from the Jatrabari area around 2:30am on December 23,” he said.

In primary interrogation, Mousumi told detectives she planned to kill Altaf with her younger brother Imon, lover Emon and uncle Masum because of family conflicts that had arisen over her extramarital affairs.

“They took position around 10:30pm at Khan Bhaban in Jatrabari on December 20 to kill Altaf. When he entered the house after work, they beat him up and strangled him to death,” Deputy Commissioner Masud said.

They then took the body to Gazipur National Forest to get rid of it, transporting it in a rented microbus around 11pm on December 21, he said.

Detectives recovered Altaf's body based on statements made by Mousumi and Masum, and sent it to Gazipur Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

A murder case was filed with Jatrabari police station by the victim's brother Jalal. Police are searching for the two absconding accomplices, Imon and Emon, Masud added.
