A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced a teenager to rigorous life time imprisonment for raping a hearing and speech impaired girl in Kalkini upazila, Madaripur.
Judge ABM Nizamul Haque of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 4 gave the verdict yesterday afternoon in a packed court room.
The convict, Md Farid, from Bashgari village in Kalkini, was absent during yesterday’s verdict. He has also been absent in the two previous hearing as well.
The incident took place in 2011. The convict was 18 and the victim was 13 at the time.
According to the case, Farid lured the victim into his house with the promise of marriage and then raped her.
Hearing the victim’s groans during the incident, her mother Amiroon Begum went inside Farid’s house and rescued her. Farid ran away from the scene.
Amiroon filed a case with Kalkini police station on August 12, 2011 in this regard under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Sub-Inspector Md Kamruzzaman, who was the investigation officer of the case, prepared the charge sheet against Farid in the same year.
Madaripur District and Sessions Judge’s Court framed charges against the accused on January 12, 2012.
The case document was sent to the Dhaka court from Madaripur on June 18 last year for speedy trial.
The court passed the verdict after recording testimonies of 11 prosecution witnesses out of 12 in the case.
