Woman commits suicide after failing to repay NGO loans

A woman hanged herself in the village of Patibila, in Jessore's Chougachha upazila reportedly after failing to repay loans that she had taken from NGOs. The woman has been named as Lipi Begum, 32, and wife to Iqbal Hossain. Family sources said Lipi took about Tk3 lakh as loan from a number of different NGOs. She was found hanged from a beam supporting the ceiling of her home on Monday afternoon. Her suicide reportedly comes after persistent harassment from NGO workers over her default, said Jasim Uddin, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Chougachha police station.   Begum's body was recovered by police on Monday evening, and has been sent to the morgue at Jessore General Hospital.
