A Dhaka Court yesterday remanded a son of former MP Khan Tipu Sultan for three days over alleged involvement in his wife’s murder. The MP and his wife, however, were granted bail.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Anwar Sadat passed the order after Sub Inspector Shafiqul Islam, also the investigation officer, sought a 10-day remand.
Humayun Sultan, son of the Jessore MP, was arrested on November 14 for allegedly murdering his 24-year old wife, Dr Shamaruf Mahzabin Kona.
Kona had been found hanging, according to her in-laws, in a bathroom of her in-law’s Dhanmondi house on November 13.
Her father, Nurul Islam, filed a murder case against Humayun and also implicated the former MP and his wife Jesmin Ara Begum.
Both the MP and his wife were granted a four-week anticipatory bail by the High Court yesterday.
Kona’s father, Nurul Islam, filed a murder case against Humayun and also implicated the former MP and his wife.
Kona’s mother-in-law Jesmin Ara Begum, also a doctor at the Dhaka’s Holy Family Hospital, said Kona went out in the morning and returned home around noon and locked her bedroom from inside. When she did not respond to the domestic help’s calls for lunch, the door was broken and Kona’s body was found hanging in the washroom.
“She hanged herself with her scarf from the washroom window,” claimed the mother-in-law. Jesmin Ara took Kona to the Central Hospital where doctors declared her dead at around 3:30pm.
However, Kazi Firozur Rahman, uncle of the deceased, claimed that Kona’s in-laws were staging a drama after killing her. Claiming that Kona’s knees were touching the floor when she was found in the washroom, he pointed out that it was impossible for a person’s legs to be touching the ground in such cases.
Kona’s father Nurul Islam had told the Dhaka Tribune that his daughter often complained about her in-laws barring her from sitting for the BCS exams and opposing her decision to study for a higher medical degree.
Nurul added that he spoke to Kona for around half an hour the very morning she was found dead, when Kona expressed her discontent about how she was treated.
An MBBS from Holy Family Medical College, Kona had been murdered in a planned manner by Tipu Sultan, her father claimed.
The autopsy report stated that the victim bore black spots around her neck and another spot in her left wrist.
Police have collected tissues from the victim’s neck for further tests.
Prof Habibuzzaman Chowdhury of Forensic Medicine Department told the Dhaka Tribune that after the test is done they would be able to say if the victim had hanged herself or was killed.
Abu Bakkar Siddique, officer-in-charge at Dhanmondi police station, said Kona’s husband – Humayun Sultan – was summoned to the police station for interrogation where he told the police that he had had a fight with Kona on Wednesday night centring an anonymous phone call. Humayun, however, told the police that the couple had made up the same night.
Asked about the incident, Humayun refused to elaborate on the issue to the Dhaka Tribune, saying he had submitted a written statement to the police.
Tipu Sultan, the former MP, said he was out the entire day and was notified about Kona’s death over phone.
Asked about his son’s possible involvement, Tipu said if his son was found guilty he would have no objection to see him tried.
