Outraged by the notorious activities of two drug peddlers, residents of Nurjahanpur village set fire to their house killing one and injuring three in Nabinagar upazila under Brahmanbaria district yesterday.
The dead is Manik Miya, 45, elder brother of Monnaf Miya who is known as the “emperor of drugs” in the village. Yesterday the villagers set fire to their house after the two brothers spoiled a “shalish” (local court) scheduled to be set up against them for theft on Saturday.
Locals said Manik had stolen three cows of one Taleb Hossain of the village on October 27. On Saturday Manik and Monnaf, along with rented goons, created panic in the village by hurling crude bombs and threatened the villagers.
Agitated by their act, the villagers chased them to their house and set fire to it leaving Manik dead on spot and three others injured. The injured are Manik’s wife Anwara Begum, 30, son Shakil, 18 and Sumon, 14.
Nabinagar police station Officer-in-Charge Rupok Kumer Saha said Manik’s dead body was sent to the District Sadar Hospital for autopsy while the injured were sent to Comilla for treatment.
“Manik was an infamous thief and drug seller in the village. The villagers committed this act after suffering from the activities for long,” said the OC.
