Woman dies as bricks fall on her

An elderly woman died and a rickshaw puller sustained injuries as bricks fell on them from an under-construction building which had no safety nets at Mohakhali in the capital yesterday.

“When Achhiya Begum, 65, a resident of Korail slum area, was passing the building riding on a rickshaw,  a bunch of bricks fell on her and rickshaw puller Mostakim, 35, from the fourth floor of the building.”

Locals rushed them to nearby a clinic where on duty doctor declared her death.  Later, the rickshaw puller was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Locals said construction of the building had been going on for the last few months, but owner of the building did not take proper measures to prevent the bricks and constructions materials from falling on the road.

Police could not arrest anyone as owner of the building went into hiding soon after the accident.

“The building is owned by one Mazhar. We found that there was lack of safety measures according to the building code.

He installed nets but that did not cover the entire building,” said Sub-Inspector Ziaul Islam of the police station.”

He said they were looking for the owner and a case will be filed in this connection.
