The High Court (HC) yesterday dismissed bail appeals in three separate cases against the chief of Ansarullah Bangla Team, Mufti Josim Uddin Rahmani, and members, Abu Hanif and Asadullah alias Pias, because the bail petitions were not pressed before the court.
An HC bench comprised of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Md Ruhul Quddus passed the order.
Deputy attorney general (DAG) Md Masud Hasan Chowdhury moved for the government side while advocate Gazi Towhidul Islam stood for Josim Uddin and advocate Md Noor Shikder stood for the other two petitioners.
DAG Masud told the Dhaka Tribune that Josim Uddin’s bail petition in a case filed in Barguna district under the ICT Act and the petitions of Abu Hanif and Asadullah in two cases filed in Dhaka under the ICT and Anti-Terrorism Acts, were dismissed as the bail petitions were not pressed before the court.
The court issued a rule as to why Josim Uddin would not be given bail in two cases filed in Dhaka, he added.
Josim Uddin, along with 30 of his accomplices, was taken into custody while conducting a secret meeting at Dakshin Khejurtala village in Barguna on August 12 last year. Police filed a case against them on the day with Barguna police station.
On August 25 last year, police arrested Abu Hanif, Asadullah and seven others from different parts of Dhaka. Police seized a huge number of jihadi books, militant training books, a computer, a laptop, a modem, handcuffs, a manual for making arms, a grenade and a sharp knife. Two separate cases were filed with Mohammadpur police station in this regard.
