Police yet to unravel mystery behind recovery of Tk57.92 lakh from Chittagong Court premises

Investigators are yet to unveil the mystery behind source of the huge sum of money  that was recovered from Chittagong Court Building area on Tuesday

Following a bomb threat alert on Tuesday, Kotwali police nabbed Md Eliash, 32, hailing Kasba in Brahmanbaria district, with Tk57.92 lakh when he was entering the Ainjibi (Lawyers) Annex Building of Chittagong Court.

However, during the primary interrogation, police failed to extract any concrete information from Elias on where he got the money or where he was heading to with the sum.

Sources at law enforcement agencies and Chittagong DC office, adjacent to Chittagong Court Building, said Elias brought the money as a bribe for an official at Land Acquisition (LA) section of DC Office.

“After analyzing the mobile phone call list of Elias, police have found some clues regarding the source of the money and its destination,” said Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Mohiuddin Selim.

“We are expecting to get more information about the incident within the next couple of days and then we will reveal the entire story behind the recoverd sum,” he added.

According to police investigation and DC office sources, the money belonged to Kadamtoli Flyover Construction Project Contractor Ziaur Rahman, owner of Zia Construction, which was being sent to Surveyor Shahidul Islam Murad of LA section of DC office, who was transferred soon after the incident.

On October 14, the trio talked each other over mobile phone for more than 20 times between 9:00am and 1:02pm, a CMP high official, seeking anonymity, told the Dhaka Tribune.

He also said that some high officials of DC office might also be involved with the incident.

If court grants police with its remand plea for Md Elias next Sunday, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) would be able interrogate him by a special team.

Meanwhile, Chittagong District Administration formed a one-member probe committee with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Abul Hossain while the district administration transferred 12 staffs of LA section from Chittagong after the incident.
