Bangladesh Coast Guard (east zone) seized 20,000 kilogrammes of Ilish fishes and eight wooden fishing boats from the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday night.
The BCG also arrested 89 fishermen on charges of ignoring an 11-day Ilish fishing ban imposed by authorities concerned.
East zone BCG Commander Captain Shahidul Islam said members of coastguard conducted a drive at the bay from Kutubdia channel to Sandwip channel on Wednesday night and arrested the fishermen with the seized fishes and boats.
The seized goods were worth around Tk94.50 lakh, he added. He said the detained fishermen were handed over to fisheries authorities to take legislative actions.
The 11-day ban was imposed by Department of Fisheries from October 5 till October 15 on mother Ilish netting to help smooth its reproduction across the country.
The zonal commander said during the ban period, they have seized fishes, current nets and boats along with other fishing equipments which was worth around Tk10 crore.
