Acid attack condemned

Women’s rights activists yesterday formed a human chain condemning the acid attack on a female school teacher by her husband and demanded speedy trial and exemplary punishment of the accused.

The programme was organised by Barisal Sammilito Nari Nirjatan Protirodh Committee, a local platform to resist violence against women, with assistance from Barisal chapter of Hunger Project Bangladesh and Acid Survivors Foundation in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall of the city in the morning.

It was presided over by Anwar Zahid, NGO organiser, and addressed among others by Khaleda Huq, former chairman of Babuganj upazila parishad, Mobarak Hossain, district president of primary teachers association, and Meher Afroj Mita, regional coordinator of The Hunger Project.

The speakers demanded death penalty of the accused for throwing acid and emphasised on strict enforcement of the law to curb violence against women.

Meanwhile, Barisal unit of Bangladesh Women Lawyers Association published a statement condemning the attack and assured of legal aid to acid victims.

Earlier on Monday, Asma Akter, 34, a teacher of Amirabad Government Primary School under Nalchhity upazila of Jhalakati received severe burn injury after her husband, Masud Alam, threw acid on her.

Barisal Kotwali police arrested Masud Alam on Monday night and the court sent him to jail on Tuesday.
