A youth, who allegedly instigated a schoolgirl to commit suicide, was found dead at his aunt's house at Ratanpur village of Kaliakoir upzila, Gazipur on Wednesday morning.
Kaliakoir police OC (investigation) Rafiqul Islam said that Arafat Sarkar, 20, son of Ataur Sarkar from Chapair area, committed suicide sometime on Tuesday night. The body was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Earlier, police recovered the body of Munni Akter, an eighth-grade student, from her house at Kutubdia village of Kaliakoir upazila on Tuesday morning.
Munni's father filed a case with Kalikoir police in the night against Arafat for provoking her to commit suicide.
Family members of Munni, who was a candidate of Junior School Certificate examination from Chapair Government Girls' High School, claimed that she had hanged herself, as Arafat had been harassing her for long.
Ripon, brother of Munni, said: “Arafat used to harass my sister on her way to school. We also complained to Arafat's family about the matter. But they did not pay heed to our appeal. Arafat also threatened that he would kill Munni and my father.”
However, Masuma Akter, mother of Arafat, said: “Hearing the news of filing a case against him over the death of Munni, Arafat went to his aunt's house and committed suicide.”
She also claimed that Arafat and Munni had been in a relation for long. But Munni's family opposed it. On Tuesday night, they rebuked both Arafat and Munni for the relationship. Later, Munni committed suicide.
“Being shocked by Munni's death, my son took his life,” she added.
