Three policemen including a sub-inspector have been injured in a "gunfight" between local criminals and police during a raid at Kashemnagar area under ramganj upazila of Lakshmipur early Wednesday.
The injured policemen are Sub-Inspector Gias Uddin, Constable Mohammad Nur and Rubel. They are receiving treatments in Ramganj Health Complex.
Police also arrested a bullet-riddled enlisted criminal named Jasim and recovered a LG gun and two rounds of bullets from the spot.
Ramganj police station Officer-in-Charge Md Lokman Hossain said: “Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid in the area to arrest Jasim in connection with murder and extortion cases.”
He said: “Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire and hurled crude bombs targeting them. In retaliation, police also fired 13 rounds of bullets on the criminals, leaving three policemen and two criminals injured early Wednesday.”
Jasim has been admitted to Lakhsmipur sadar hospital in critical condition, said the official.
