2 held over CU engineer abduction

Khulna police have arrested two abductors from Gilbari Bazar area under Koyra upazila in Khulna on Sunday night.

The arrestees are Akbar Molla, 40, chief of an abduction gang in the Sunderbans, and his accomplice Noor Muhammad, 32.

Both are the inhabitants of Sathail village of Moheshwaripur in the district.

Officer-in-Charge of Koyra police station, Harendranath Sarker said: “Acting on a tip-off, police went on an operation to Sathail village and nabbed the criminals on Sunday night.”

“As per their confession, we also recovered one firearm and four rounds of bullets from their residence early Monday,” he added.

On October 2, a gang of criminals led by Akbar abducted Mahfuzur Rahman, executive engineer of Chittagong University (CU), from the railway station and took him to the Sunderbans.

Earlier, Akbar invited Mahfuzur Rahman, executive engineer of Chittagong University (CU), to visit a fisheries project in Khulna.

Being informed, police rescued executive engineer Mahfuzur from Hadda area under Koyra upazila in the Sunderbans through mobile tracking on October 3 while the abductors managed to flee from the spot.
