A total of nine people were killed and 28 others were injured in road accidents in four districts across the country yesterday.
The death victims included students and passers-by while the injured were admitted to different clinics and hospitals.
Madaripur
Five people, including three students and a child, were killed in a road crash at Bandarkhola in Shibchar near Dhaka-Khulna highway yesterday morning.
The five were Halima Akhter, 17, Imran Howladar, 18, Rehana Akhter, 17, Shakib, 4, and Arjuda Begum, 40.
A Kawrakandi-bound passenger bus of Ruposhi Paribahan, which was travelling from Khulna, ran over three people, leaving two of them dead on the spot.
The third person and two others, who were in a van near the scene, received serious injuries and died while being taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Angry locals blockaded the highway for three hours and vandalized the bus, causing a 15km tailback. They lifted the blockade when police arrived.
Madaripur Police Super Khandakar Faridul Islam said driver of the bus fled the scene and could not be held.
Tangail
An unidentified passer-by was killed and 21 others were injured in three separate road crashes in the district yesterday.
Gorai Highway police station Officer-in-Charge Jobaidul Alam said a north-bound passenger bus ran over the passer-by at Cotton Mill area in Gorai, leaving him seriously injured.
He was admitted to Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur where he later died.
In another incident, 15 garment workers were injured when the driver of a passenger bus of Boghdad Paribahan lost control after reaching Sohagpara area in Mirzapur and plunged into a ditch.
Firefighters rushed to the scene, rescued the injured and sent them to Kumudini Hospital.
All 15 work at Increment Apparel Limited in Karnaphuli area of Chittagong, and they were travelling to their hometowns to celebrate Eid with family members.
The third accident at Gharinda area, which left six people injured, involved a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a pickup truck.
The six were admitted to Kumudini Hospital and Tangail Medical College Hospital.
Mymensingh
A man was killed and two others were injured in a road accident at Haluaghat bus terminal yesterday.
Witnesses said the driver of a passenger bus, while entering the bus terminal, lost control and ran over some passers-by, leaving Nurul Amin, 40, dead on the spot.
The injured were Nobi Hossain, 45, and Borhan Uddin, 40, a newspaper hawker by profession. Borhan was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
The bus was seized but the driver managed to flee, police said.
Natore
Two people, including a schoolgirl, were killed and five others were injured in separate road accidents in Natore yesterday.
The deceased were Maharam Ali, 45, son of late Md Ali of Kechowakora village, and Rahima Khatun, 12, daughter of late Hasan Ali of village Gurumshoil in Baraigram upazila.
Sub-Inspector of Banpara highway police camp Samiul Islam said, a Pabna-bound truck collided head-on with an autorickshaw at Khejurtala area.
Maharam, driver of the autorickshaw, died on the spot while five passengers of the vehicle were injured. They were admitted to local clinics.
In another incident, Rahima, a sixth-grader at Banpara Model High School, accidentally got her throat wrapped with her dupatta while riding an autorickshaw. The incident happened when the dupatta got tangled in the wheel of the vehicle, causing her to fall on the road and pass out.
She was rushed to a local clinic where doctors pronounced her dead.
Besides, police recovered a body which was floating in the Nandakuja River near Rasunhata bridge area.
Ibrahim Hossain, officer-in-charge of Gurudaspur police station, said police went to the spot and recovered the body after local people had informed them of it.
“The victim’s two hands were cut off and the body might have been dumped in the river around a week ago,” he added.
