A Chittagong court has awarded double rigorous imprisonments for life term to six persons for abducting and raping two RMG workers at North Koroldanga village under Boalkhali upazila of the district in 2006.
The judge of Chittagong Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal 1 M Rezaul Karim pronounced the verdict convicting Nezam Uddin, Kamal Uddin, Jahangir alias Jan-e-Alam, Moulana Nijam Uddin and Sumon of Anwara upazila of the district.
The court also fined them Tk800,000 and ordered to give the money to the victims within six months.
According to the BSS, the convicts abducted and raped the victims-- two cousins-- while they were returning to their rented house from their work place around 9:30pm on May 15, 2006.
A band of five miscreants who came by tempo intercepted their rickshaws on Arakan road and raped them after taking them to an abandoned house.
Later, the following day, one of the victims filed a case under Chittagong Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.
Police submitted chargesheet on August 15, 2006 while the court framed charges on June 26, 2007.
The court on Tuesday after examining a total of eight, out of 16 prosecution witnesses, found them guilty.
