20 JCD leaders and activists arrested in Sylhet

Sylhet Metropolitan Police yesterday arrested around 20 activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, including its recently announced district unit President Saeed Ahmad.

The other arrestees are Chhatra Dal leaders Farooq Ahmad, Suhin Ahmed Chowdhury, Ziaur Rahman Romen, Ahmed Zaki, Mizan Ahmed and Masum Ahmed.

Sylhet airport station Officer-in-Charge Shah Zaman confirmed the news.

Meanwhile, Kotwali police arrested around 12 including Ali Akbar Rajan, Raisul Islam Sony, Faiz, Sagor, Ripon, Afzal and Akhter from Meerbox Tula area.

SI Mubasher, second officer of Kotwali police station, said: “An announcement signed by the organisation’s central office secretary Nazmul Hasan declared the 16-member committee of Sylhet district and metropolitan Chhatra Dal on Thursday.”

“Saeed Ahmed was announced President while Rahat Chowdhury Munna declared general secretary of the Sylhet district committee. Nurul Alam Siddiqui Khaled was declared metropolitan committee president and Abu Saleh Mohammad Lokman appointed as general secretary,” the official added.

Mubasher said this committee was given one-month period to form an 81 members full committee.

After the announcement of the new committee, many activists demonstrated for and against the decision. Crude bombs were exploded and several clashes took place in the city.
