Case filed a month after speech impaired girl was raped in Chandpur

A 14-year old speech-impaired girl was raped in Chandpur by her own uncle on August 1. But the victim's mother filed a case with the Women and Child Repression Prevention Special Tribunal on September 15, after well over a month.

Md Ohidur Rahman Bhuiyan, 55, of Haimchar upazila, took advantage of the disability of his niece and raped her. A local woman rescued the girl upon hearing noise from a nearby betel leaf plantation. The perpetrator however managed to flee.

The victim's mother Khushida Begum said advised by local people who assured her of justice, she did not file any case at that time. When over a month lapsed, she decided to lodge a complaint with the Haimchar police station, but the police refused to register her case. Having no alternative, she approached the special tribunal. A powerful quarter was still trying to bury the incident, she said.

Officer in-Charge of Haimchar police station, Md Moniruzzaman told the Dhaka Tribune that they had not received any directive to investigate the case.

He denied the allegation that the police had not registered the case.
