Hospital vandalised by patient’s relatives

Relatives of a patient vandalised the Upazila Health Complex in Chauddagram and assaulted on-duty doctors and other hospital staff yesterday. The hospital staff observed an hour work abstention protesting the attack yesterday. Dr Monirul Islam, resident doctor of the health complex, said an injured man from Ramra area of Chauddagram was brought to the health complex around 12am yesterday.

After giving him first aid, the doctors referred him to Comilla Medical College. When the patient’s family members asked for the ambulance, the hospital authority told them that the ambulance of the hospital was not working.

The hospital authority and patient’s relatives got involved in an altercation regarding the issue and at one point Mizan, 18, and Shakil, 19, vandalised the emergency ward of the hospital.

When Dr Shawkat Mahmud, Dr Mezbah Uddin and health assistant Sirajul Islam tried to deter them, they were attacked too. The vandalisers also beat up two other hospital staff Sribas Chandra and Masud.

Officer-in-Charge of Chauddagram police station Uttam Kumar Chakrabarti told the Dhaka Tribune that Dr Monirul Islam lodged a case against Mizan, Shakil and 25 other unnamed people. Police were trying to arrest them, he added.
