The High Court has ordered the officer-in-charge of Kumarkhali police to register an FIR over the assault on ETV journalist Akhil Poddar by policemen on August 27.
The bench of Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ashraful Kamal passed the order yesterday following a writ petition filed by the victim.
In an interim order, the court directed the home secretary to submit a report within four weeks after forming a probe committee over the incident. The Kumarkhali OC has been asked to submit a compliance report by September 17.
Akhil filed the petition yesterday. Lawyer Manzil Murshid moved for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Shaju for the state.
The court issued a rule asking as to why appropriate legal actions should not be taken against the criminals who assaulted the journalist. “The court also wanted to know why the inaction of the defendants should not be declared illegal in terms of accepting a case over the matter.”
