Double tragedy for Bihari camp fire survivor

One of the two survivors from the family that lost nine members in Mirpur Bihari camp fire incident this year, died in a road accident yesterday leaving a 16-year-old daughter behind.

The dead is Yasin Ali, 55, son of Ismail Hossain hailing from Choklokman area of Bogra district.

Eye-witnesses said he was rammed between two buses in front of the Purobi Cinema Hall in Pallabi area around 10am.

Critically injured, Yasin was taken to the Dhaka Medical Collage Hospital (DMCH) where the doctors declared him dead around 2pm.

He was a resident of house no 31 in Purbo Kurmitola Camp in Kalshi in Mirpur.

In June this year, a series of clashes among Bihari people of old Kurmitola camp in Kalshi, police and outsiders, centring explosion of firecrackers, left nine members of a family dead in Mirpur.

Md Yasin’s wife Baby, 40, son Ashik, 27, Ashik’s wife Shikha, three daughters – Shahana, 26, Afsana, 19, and Roksana, 16, twins Lalu and Bhulu, 14, and Shahana’s two-year-old son Maruf died in the arson attack.

Yasin and his daughter Farzana Akhter survived the attack.

Farzana who was admitted at DMCH burn unit came back to home a week ago.

Two days before, she was informed about the death of her nine family members. Yesterday evening she came to know about her father’s death.

Yasin’s cousin Sonu told the Dhaka Tribune: “Farzana has become restless as she has to bear the shock. She got to know about her father’s death before she could overcome the grief of the deaths of other family members in camp fire incident.”

Yasin went out to bring medicines for his daughter, she said.

His body was taken to Bihari camp after postmortem.

Pallabi police station Sub-Inspector Farooq said no case was filed in this connection yet.
