A fake physician has been sent to jail for attempting to give fake Hepatitis-B vaccines to primary school students in Babuganj upazila of Barisal on Monday afternoon.
The accused was identified as Ashraful Islam, 35, son of Jalaluddin, from Charfession of Bhola district and former laboratory assistant of Al-Nur Diagnostic Center of Dhaka.
Locals said Ashraful came to Manikkathi Government Primary School on Saturday and exchanged views with the teachers, students and locals identifying himself as a hepatitis-specialist.
He wished to hold a medical camp there on Sunday to save the local people and students from the deadly disease.
Ashraful advised to take the vaccines immediately which offered a special offer of a reduced rate of vaccination at the medical camp which will cost Tk250 for under 12-years and Tk350 for over 12-years.
Local medical practitioner Hemayetuddin, Jubo League leader Shahin Mahmud challenged Ashraf’s identification due to his suspicious activities.
In interrogation it was proved that Ashraf was a fake doctor and he was cheating people using experiences of laboratory assistant.
He confessed that he administrated fake Hepatitis-B vaccines at more than 40 educational institutions in different areas of the country and collected the fake vaccines from Zinzira of Dhaka.
He also claimed that although his vaccines were not original and effective, but it would not endanger any human body.
A fake identity card and fake Hepatitis-B vaccine ampoules were also recovered from his possession.
The fiercely agitated people tied the fake doctor to a tree after giving him mass beating.
Shaheduzzaman, Barisal Airport police station officer-in-charge said: “Police rescued the accused on Sunday afternoon and produced him before the court on Monday noon after lodging a case.”
“The arrested fake physician was accused under section 81 of BMP Act and the court ordered to send him to jail rejecting his bail prayer,” said Sub Inspector Munir Hossain of Airport police station and complainant of the case.
