The recent muggings in Khulna city have turned this industrial city into a safe haven for snatchers.
Incidents of CNG hijacking, killing of muggers by angry mobs and robing traders has become a common phenomenon in the city with a population of move than a hundred and forty thouand.
Local sources said seven sensational incidence of mugging took place in the city and a total of Tk1 crore had been snatched during the last year alone.
Two alleged muggers as well as a schoolboy was killed in recent mass beatings.
On August 22 A suspected mugger was killed and another injured in a mob beating in the Basupara area of the city on August 22.
Maruf Hossain, officerincharge of Sonadanga Model police station, said locals caught Foyzul Islam, 28, and Al Mamunduo in the act of mugging in the area.
Later, the angry mob gave them a good beating, leaving them seriously injured.
They were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital where Foyzul succumbed to his injuries
On August 21, muggers took away Tk60 lakh after shooting a fish trader at Jabusa intersection under Rupsha upazila in the district.
Officer-in-Charge of Khulna District Detective Branch TM Rokonuzzaman said the muggers waited for Ashraful Sheikh, owner of Lamia Fish in the East Rupsha area, and shot at them around 2:30pm while he along with his employee was going to his work place on a motorcycle after drawing Tk60 lakh from Khulna Brac Bank.
Later, the criminals fled the scene with the money. A case was filed with Rupsha police station in this connection.
On June 3, a gang of snatchers took away Tk17 lakh from some traders intercepting a truck at Dumuria of the district.
Upon filling a case, police arrested six people in possession of Tk7 lakh on June 4.
On January 25, miscreants took away a CNG-run auto rickshaw after killing its driver Medihi Hasan at Daulatpur. On January, muggers snatched Tk18,000 and a mobile phone from a students who was identified as Shohag.
Local sources said people fell prey to mugging when they visited the New Market, Tutpara graveyard and CDA avenue areas.
According to cases filed with different police station of the city, professional gangs of Fakirhat area are involved in the recent mugging.
Asked about the development of the case of the Tk60 lakh snatching, Md Habibur Rahman, police super, Khulna told the Dhaka Tribune that they were investigating the matter.
He said, “As it is an on going investigation, it will not be wise to say something about it.
