Ashulia UP member tortures 8th-grader for being friends with a girl

Police have sent a gravely injured teenager to hospital on Friday who was denailed and tortured by a union parishad member (UP) and his associates in Dhaka’s Ashulia area on Wednesday. According to the father of victim, Sani Alam, and locals, the torturers falsely accused Sani, who is well known at the locality for his politeness, of stealing. Sani’s father Sarwar Hossain, an auto-rickshaw driver, told the Dhaka Tribune that the UP member Abdul Alim Shohag and his men dragged Sani out of home and took him to an abandoned place nearby on Wednesday afternoon. “They tortured my son for four hours and denailed one of his toes. They sent my son back home when his physical condition deteriorated to a serious degree,” Sarwar added. “Basically my son was tortured on the charge of having a friendship with a girl in the locality,” the victim’s father claimed. Kibria, father of the girl Sani was friends with, was arrested in this connection, Ashulia police station officer-in-charge Abdul Awal confirms the Dhaka Tribune. According to locals, Sani, 13, an eighth-grader at local Professor Para High School, used to help out his father by driving auto-rickshaw part-time.
