Police yesterday arrested two siblings for their alleged involvement in the murder of a youth, who was allegedly lynched by a mob who thought he was a thief, at the Chittagong city’s EK Kilometer area on Tuesday.
“The arrestees were Saifur Rahman, 21, an honors student, and his brother Mukiar Hossain, 18, an HSC candidate,” said Sub-Inspector (SI) Abul Kalam Azad of Chandagon Police Station.
Earlier on Tuesday, 19-year old Joni, from Debider of Comilla, was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in a critical state after police rescued him from being lynched by a mob on suspicions of being a thief. The victim later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
SI Azad, who is also the investigating officer of the case, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The victim was caught by the two siblings from the second floor of their residence and they beat him mercilessly suspecting him to be a thief.
Following the incident, the victim’s father filed a murder case accusing 10 to 12 people, including the name of the duo, on the same day with Chandgaon police station.
The arrestees were sent to jail after producing them before the Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court on Wednesday noon, added the SI.
