2 suspects of police officer’s murder killed in shootout

Two suspects in the case of police officer Nurul Islam’s murder were killed, while one other was injured, during a gunfight with law enforcers on Sunday in Mirzapur upazila, Tangail.

Sources said police acted on a tip-off and raided the residence of Azizur Rahman Babu in South Tatkia Kadma Ghonapara village toarrest Ulka, the prime suspect in the case.

Sensing the presence of police, Ulka and his associates opened fire at them, triggering the gunfight.

At one stage of the shootout, Ulka was shot and died instantly around 4am, said Akhtaruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Tangail Model police station.

Two of Ulka’s associates – Shahed and Sagar alias Dollar – sustained bullet injuries as well, he said.

Shahed, shot in his eye, and Sagor, shot in his leg, were rushed to Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital in a critical condition and later shifted to Tangail Medical College and Hospital. Of them, Shahed died on Wednesday, confirmed Saleh Mohammed Tanvir, superintendent of police.

Earlier on July 25, criminals shot and injured Nurul Islam, 30, an assistant sub-inspector at Tangail Model police station, when he was conducting a drive to arrest Ulka. He died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital the following day.

A case was filed with the police station accusing Ulka and his cohorts of Nurul’s murder.
