Crew among 2 held with 1.3kg gold at Dhaka airport

A Saudi Arabian Airlines crew and an employee at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were held with seven gold bars and several chains weighing to 1.3 kg at the airport on Friday night.

The detainees were identified as Nazir Ahmed, a crew of the Saudi Airlines, and Shahjalal Airport employee Alam Khan of Faridpur district.

The personnel of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) held them, Moinul Khan, Director General of the CIID, told the Dhaka Tribune.

He said the gold bars and chains worth around Tk65 lakh were smuggled into Dhaka on a flight of the Saudi Airlines from Saudi Arabia at around 8pm. The gold bars and chains were being carried by the Saudi Airlines crew.

The CIID official said acting on a tip-off, they arrested airport employee Aslam Khan while he was receiving the smuggled gold at the Immigration Hall.

"Both the Saudi Airlines employee and the airport employee are members of the same ring used to smuggle gold and Aslam was supposed to smuggle the gold out of the airport for handing it over to other members of the ring," said Moinul Khan.

The gold bars and chains were found in their possessions by searching their bodies.

The detained persons were undergoing interrogation for gathering information about other members of the ring, he added.
