BGB-drug smuggler gunfight leaves 3 hurt in Cox’s Bazar

Three people, including two members of Border Guard of Bangladesh, were wounded in a shootout early yesterday between yaba smugglers and the border guard personnel in Maulvipara area of Teknaf upazila here.

The injured personnel of BGB 24 battalion are Nayeb Abdur Razzak and Sepoy Mubarak Hossain. They were admitted to the local health complex while the injured smuggler Nazir Hossain, 30, was admitted to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital in a critical condition. 

Teknaf BGB 42 battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Abujar Al-Jahid said acting on a tip-off, a patrol team from his unit conducted a drive on the estuary of the Naf River, which divides Bangladesh and Myanmar, around 3am.

Sensing the presence of the law-men, the armed drug smugglers, who were bringing yaba into the country, started firing shots at the BGB members, forcing them to retaliate, ultimately leaving three injured.

Afterwards, one firearm and one round of bullets and 10,000 pieces of yaba were recovered after searching drug smuggler Nazir’s body.

However, the other drug smugglers managed to escape during the gunfight.
