Man paid to serve jail for rape-case convict

Nasir Uddin Khokon has been willingly serving a jail-term for rape accused in Munshiganj for the last three years.

Khokon, is from Hatagaon village of Sonaimuri upazila in Noakhali, had agreed to impersonate the real convict of the case, Jamal of Noapara village in Munshiganj, in exchange of a payment of Tk5 lakh.

However, the scheme plotted by the real convict was unveiled when members of Tejgaon industrial police station arrested Jamal from a house in the capital’s  East Nakhalpara area on Friday night.

Taking to the Dhaka Tribune, Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Biplab Sarkar said a Munsiganj court had sentenced Jamal to life-term imprisonment along with Tk10,000 as fine in 2011 in absentia for raping a woman in Shreenagar in 2005.

During the trial process, Jamal fled the country and had stayed in Oman.

“Few months after returning to Bangladesh, Jamal hired Nasir to impersonate him at court with promise to pay him Tk5 lakh and freed him on bail with the help of a lawyer within three months,” the DC added.

“As per the deal, Nasir appeared before the court impersonating Jamal and the court sent him to jail. However, Jamal betrayed Nasir and fled leaving Oman in jail,” said Biplab.

Sub-Inspector Jahangir Alam from Tejgaon police said “After around three years, Jamal returned to Bangladesh

and on this information, the relatives of Nasir informed the police about the scheme. Jamal was later arrested from his rented house at Nakhalpara.”

“Jamal has been sent to jail after being produced before a Dhaka court seeking remand. The court fixed today [Sunday] for the hearing of the remand prayer,” he added.

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, DC Biplab Sarkar said police would inform the fact to the respective Munsiganj court immediately.
