A member of Naltona union parishad in Sadar upazila here allegedly beat up his wife and severely injured her for dowry yesterday.
The victim, Renu Begum, 32, who was admitted to Barguna General Hospital in the afternoon, raised the allegation against his husband M Shahidul Islam, ward no 6 member of the UP.
Renu said she was marred to Shahidul about 13 years ago and the couple has two children as well.
Her husband had long been torturing her with the starting of their conjugal life demanding dowry and as part of it, several months ago, he started pressing her to fetch Tk1 lakh from her father.
When she denied to do so, Shahidul beat up her mercilessly on the day, leaving her badly injured, Renu stated.
She continued that Shahidul recently married a minor girl for the fourth time and since then has been threatening her to leave the house in case of not meeting his dowry demand.
Naltona union parishad Charirman KM Shafikuzzaman Mahfuz said Renu lodged a complaint of the torture to him against Shahidul.
When contacted, Shahidul denied the allegation raised against him, saying they divorced long time ago.
Mentionable that eight bundle of relief tin sheets allocated for the cyclone Mahasen affected people were recovered from Shahidul’s house and in the incident, a case was launched against him.
