Tk80 lakh Jewelry seized in Shah Amanat

The customs authority has seized 2.08 kilogram of gold jewelry from a hand luggage of a Dubai returned passenger in Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong on Tuesday morning.

Mashiur Rahman Mandal, assistant commissioner (AC) of Chittagong Customs House in Shah Amanat Interational Airport, told Dhaka Tribune: “The customs authorities noticed the gold ornaments while checking the hand bags of a Dubai returned passenger, Perveen, around 7:30am.

Later, the seized ornaments worth Tk80 lakh, have been kept in the custody of Chittagong Customs House officials and the passenger and her two children were let to go,” he added.

Under the existing Passenger (non-tourists) Baggage Rule, a passenger can bring up to 200 grams (about 17 tola) of gold ornament as duty-free. The passenger also can bring another 200 grams of gold bar on payment of Tk150 specific duty for each tola, said the AC.

“Perveen can release her ornaments after paying necessary taxes and fines according to Customs Act.”
