Police with the help of local people have arrested four members of a gang of criminals during an attempt of kidnapping an official of a private firm impersonating them as the members of the Detective Branch (DB) in capital’s Banani on Monday.
The detained fake DB personnel were identified as Md Mamun, Abu Bakar, Mostofa Kamal and Dipu alias Al Amin.
Police have also recovered handcuffs, walky-talkies and a microbus from their possessions.
According to the officials of the Banani police station, two other members of the gang managed to escape the scene.
Meanwhile, victim Jan-e-Alam Chowdhury, an official of BD Thai Cosmo Ltd, was admitted to nearby clinic Ayesha Memorial as he had been mercilessly beaten up by the criminals during their attempt of kidnapping the victim.
Injured victim said the criminals’ gang had intercepted him immediate after he had drawn Tk2.60 lakh from the branch of BRAC Bank at Banani Super Market.
“When I had reached near the Banani Mosque, the criminals forcibly picked up me in a microbus and wearied a handcuff in my hands”, said Jan-e-Alam.
“Identifying themselves as DB personnel, they also beat me up mercilessly for unknown reasons.”
He said the local people and police went forward when he had made hue and cry for help.
“They also stabbed me at my head”, said Alam.
Sub-Inspector Shahida Akhter of Banani police station said police arrested those criminals in support of the local people from in front of the Banani Mosque with handcuffs, walky-talkies and a microbus.
The SI said the criminals had tried to kidnap the victim as per an attempt of snatching the money from the victim he had drawn from a bank.
A case was filed in connection with the attempt of kidnapping Jan-e-Alam and snatching his money, said SI Sahida.
The SI also said they were trying to arrest other members of the gang who fled away as local people had chased after them.
