Mystery as well as contradictions have shrouded over the arrest of an Indian national for his alleged links with the gambling over the T-20 cricket match in Dhaka.
The mystery has deepened and contradictions brewed up when the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) personnel claimed the arrest of the Indian national on Sunday afternoon at the capital’s Gabtoli.
However, the immigration police in Benapole had disclosed the arrest of the same person on April 3.
The disclosure on the arrest of the Indian national by the immigration police have already been published by almost all the national and international news agencies and dailies in Bangladesh on April 4 and 5.
However, Rab officials claimed that they were not aware of anything about whether the man was earlier had been arrested anywhere by any other agency.
“We have arrested Indian national Atanu Datta at Gabtoli in Mirpur on Sunday afternoon”, said sub-inspector Kazi Abul Hasan of Rab-1.
He also filed a case with Mirpur police station in connection with the claimed arrest of the Indian national.
Asked, he said Atanu had been taking part in the gambling of the cricket match staying inside the Mirpur Stadium and had left the stadium sensing that he had been under the surveillance of the police.
“We arrested him while he had been trying to flee away,” he said, adding: “So far, we have information, Atanu had been staying at Grand Prince Hotel in Mirpur.”
Wing Commander ATM Habibur Rahman, Director of Legal and Media Wing of Rab, said they had no information on whether the Indian national had been arrested at the border by any other agency.
“If the Indian national had been arrested by any agency, then how could we get him”, asked the Rab director.
In another reply, Wing Commander Habibur Rahman said they could not send short message or mail to media as they were busy although the Rab is used to inform every of its success.
The BBC Bangla Service on April 4 reported that Atanu Datta, Son of Manindra Datta, at Dinesh Palli Municiple Park in 24-Pargana of West Bengal, was arrested by the immigration police at Benapole border on April 3.
Quoting Mohammad Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Benapol immigration police, the BBC mentioned that Atanu entered in Bangladesh on March 15, but he did not return India despite his visa was expired on March 31.
On April 3, OC Moniruzzaman told media they had instruction from the higher authorities about Atanu. So, he could not cross the border for his suspicious activities.
He also mentioned that after the arrest of the India national, officials from Rab and different other agencies took away him from the immigration police for interrogation.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has granted bail to the India national on Monday.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mahabubur Rahman has passed the order when Mirpur police produced the Indian national before the court on Monday, seeking his remand for seven days.
Earlier, the Rab-1 personnel handed him over to Mirpur police and filed a case against him under the Information and Communication Act (ACT Act).
In the remand petition, police mentioned that the accused should be interrogated to find out more information about those involved with him.
