Police file case against Jatiya Party activists

Santahar police filed a case against 25 Jatiya Party activists, including 13 named in connection with an attack on Inter-City Titumir Express of the Nilfamari-Rajshahi route.

ASI Mizanur Rahman of Santahar GRP police station filed the case on Thursday midnight and arrested two accused Mohammad Nupur, 28, and Shahjahan Ali, 30.

Sources said activists of ruling Awami League and Jatiya Party had been bargaining with police last few days to take control of smuggling through rail route, adding that police came to a mutual understanding with ruling party activists on Wednesday night in this regard. When the news spread out, Jatiya Party activists allegedly carried out an attack on Titumir Express at Santahar Junction on Thursday night.

Police said tention beefed up in the area following the incident, but the situation was brought control. Addition law enforcers were deployed in the area and drives were on to arrest the criminals.

Locomotive driver Abdul Malek, who lost his two fingers in the attack, said the attackers swooped on the train around 8pm and started looting the passengers.

At one stage of the attack, local activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League rushed to Santahar Junction with sticks, and took control of the station area by chasing the attackers.

Jatiya Party President of Adamdighi upazila unit Nazir Hossain claimed that no Jatiya Party activist was involved in the attack, adding that he did not have any idea on who carried out the attack. He and his fellows were talking to police personnel at the GRP police station while the attack was carried out, Nazir also claimed.
