A leader of Sramik Dal, the workers’ front of BNP, has been shot and hacked to death in broad daylight in Tangail Sadar upazila on Tuesday.
Local Unit Sramik Dal called a half day strike in protest of the incident, General Secretary of Tangail unit, Munir Hossain informed the Dhaka Tribune.
The dead has been identified as Golam Azam, son of Afaz Uddin, from the upazila and the joint organising secretary of Tangail unit of Sramik Dal, police said.
Azam was at his business centre at Beel Gharinda area when five youths, riding three motorcycles, attacked him around 3pm, wife Zannatul Fatema said.
They shot and hacked Azam indiscriminately and fled, leaving him critically injured, she said. Locals rushed him to Tangail General Hospital.
Ashraful, younger brother of Azam, said: “Azam died on the way to Dhaka while he was being taken for medical treatment following doctors’ suggestion.”
He sustained three bullets and several gashes on his body, he added.
Tangail Model police Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam endorsed the death. “Azam had five bullets in his body and one slash wound.”
The attack could have been motivated from previous enmity, the OC added. The body has been kept at Tangail General Hospital morgue.
