A gang of robbers looted Tk17 lakh in cash and other valuables from the residence of a senior government official in the capital’s Mohammadpur area yesterday after holding his family hostage at gunpoint, police said.
The incident took place at the house of Abdul Halim, senior secretary to the public administration ministry, at Tajmahal Road early yesterday.
“The gang, comprising six to seven members, entered the house from the roof of the building and held all the family members hostage at gunpoint,” said Biplab Kumer Sarkar, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon police.
The police officer said the robbers also assaulted the family members when the secretary’s wife delayed in handing over the keys of the almirah.
The family members said the alleged criminals at one state snatched away the keys from her hand and made off with gold jewellery and Tk17 lakh in cash.
Mohammadpur police said the process was on for filing a case in this connection.
“We are trying to arrest the robbers and recover the looted ornaments and cash money,” said Biplab Sarkar.
