Businessman held with 11kg gold in capital

The Rapid Action Battalion has arrested a gold trader found with 100 bars of smuggled gold at the capital’s Press Club area on Sunday afternoon.

Identified as Bijoy Sarkar of Kholamora, the 42-year-old gold businessman was held by the personnel of Rab 3 at around 1pm near the Press Club while he was passing through the area in a private car. Inside the car were 100 gold bars weighing 10.6kg.

According to a Rab 3 official, the Rab members acted on a tip off and seized the gold by setting up a check post. The gold was worth a total of Tk5 crore.

He said the detained man had been driving the car and he failed to show any paper or proper documentation for the gold bars.

“There were 16 packets hidden inside the car. Each of the packets contained six bars of gold except one, which contained four gold bars,” said wing commander ATM Habibur Rahman, director of Legal and Media wing of Rab.

He said each of the gold bars have “Asgor Heraeus SA Switzerland.10 tolas melter assyer 999.0” written on the body.
