Newborn dies out of faulty delivery

A newborn baby died as his umbilical cord was severed wrongly by unskilled nurses and maids at Narayanganj 300-bed hospital in Khanpur yesterday.

Admitting the wrong treatment, the hospital authorities have decided to take punitive steps against those responsible for the death of the baby.

Hospital sources said Amina Begum, wife of Selim of Narayanganj Bandar upazila, was admitted to the hospital early Friday after she started feeling labour pain.

Later, two hospital nurses - Beauty and Ambia and two maids - Momtaj and Rahima assisted Amena in her delivery.

Around 6:40am, Amena gave birth to a baby boy who died after a while.

Admitting her fault, Momtaj told them that they had cut the umbilical cords in a wrong way that led to his death.

Dr Jahangir said as per the laws, today they would take punitive measures against the persons responsible.
