Babar, Nizami sent to Kashimpur jail

Four death row convicts including former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar and Industry Minister and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Motiur Rahman Nizami in the 10-truck arms haul cases were sent to Dhaka yesterday.

Nizami and Babar were sent to Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur, while two other convicts Maj Gen (retd) Rezzaqul Haider Chowdhury and Brig Gen (retd) Mohammad Abdur Rahim were forwarded to Dhaka Central Jail, said Mohammad Sagir Miah, senior jail super in Chittagong Central Jail.

The transfer was undertaken considering the schedules of a hartal and Biswa Ijtema, he said, adding that they were being transported in their prison uniforms.

Meanwhile, Chittagong Central Jail sources said as the four convicts were accused in separate cases which were under trial in Dhaka, they were sent to the capital.

Nizami is accused in a case that is under trial in the International War Crimes Tribunal where the three others are also sued in the August 21 grenade attack case, sources said.

The 14 accused in the 10-truck arms haul case, including Babar and Nizami, were sentenced to death on January 30, around 10 years after the incident.

Amongst the convicted 14, Ulfa commander Paresh Barua and former additional secretary of industries ministry Nurul Amin are absconding.
