Bank burglary: Mastermind handed over to police

Habibur Rashid alias Sohel Rana, the detained mastermind in the burglary of Tk16.4 crore from the Sonali Bank branch in Kishorganj, and his aid Idris have been handed over to Kishoreganj police.

RAB Director Habibur Rahman confirmed the matter to the Dhaka tribune on Wednesday afternoon.

He said a team of Kishoreganj police led by Abdul Malek, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kishorganj Sadar police station, left RAB headquarters in Uttara around 2:30pm along with Sohel and Idris.

He said: “The detainees were handed over to police on Tuesday night but they were not sent for Kishoreganj immediately for security reasons.”

OC Abdul Malek said they would produce the burglars before the court on Thursday with remand plea.

RAB arrested Sohel and Idris from capital's Shyampur Balurmath area on Tuesday afternoon, two day after they allegedly have stolen Tk16.4 crore from a branch of Kishoreganj Sonali Bank.

Habib alias Sohel was arrested with the burgled money from Tonoy Vila, Col Ziaul Ahsan, additional director general (operation) of RAB, told the Dhaka Tribune.

Earlier, eight policemen were suspended on the same day following the incident. These policemen were deployed in the barrack located in the basement of the branch to maintain the security of the vault.

Our Kishoreganj Correspondent reports the special team of the district police along with the arrestees has reached the district round 9:15pm.

On the other hand, police have released 16 bank officials and staff members among the 17 detainees after initial investigation. MLSS Abu Bakar Siddique has been kept under police custody for further quizzing, said Kishoreganj Additional Police Super Liton Kumar Saha.
