Brothers to die for killing sister, nieces

Two brothers were given the death penalty for killing their sister and four nieces, a sensational case, in Barisal on Tuesday. Three affiliates were given life.

The two awarded with the death penalty were Shahidul Islam Boiragi and his absconding brother and suspended policeman Shahjahan Boiragi.

Barisal First Additional District Sessions Judge Md Motiar Rahman passed the order. Sultan Khan, Kayum Khan and Abul Bashar were sentenced for life.

The accused were also fined Tk5,000 each and six-month imprisonment more for default.

Five others were acquitted of all charges after the prosecution failed to prove charges against them.

Hacked and slaughtered bodies of Tanjila Begum, 38, and her daughters Ferdausi Begum, 6, Jannat Begum, 10, Sathi Begum, 14, and Anjuman, 17, were recovered on June 30, 2008 from their house in Mehendiganj upazila.

Chowkidar Nuruzzaman lodged a case against anonymous people with Mehendiganj police on July 1 that year.

Eleven people were arrested as suspects. Shahed Boiragi confessed to the killing with his brother for what he said was land dispute, grabbing and rivalry.
