A Dhaka court yesterday placed police Constable Shawkat Ali on a three-day remand in a case filed against him for his alleged involvement with the murder of a man whose decapitated body was found at the city’s Rajarbagh Police Lines barrack on Tuesday
Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzman Noor passed the order after Tofael Ahmed, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Paltan police station, produced Shawkat before the court seeking a 10-day remand in the case.
Police detained Shawkat from the Rajarbagh Police Lines barrack early Wednesday, following information from the family members of the victim.
Earlier on Tuesday, the police found a beheaded body from the roof of a five-storey building at Rajarbagh traffic police barracks, while the severed head was later recovered from a nearby pond on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Nannu Munshi, a village quack (kobiraj) from Bakkhana village in Jhikargachha upazila of Jessore.
Police sources said Nannu had allegedly collected around Tk1 lakh 70 thousand from Shawkat in phases, with the promise of resolving marital disputes between the constable and his wife.
On Monday, Nannu came to Shawkat and demanded more money, prompting an altercation on the rooftop that eventually led to the murder of Nannu by Shawkat.
