A Jubo Dal leader was killed in a “gunfight” with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at the village of Dharnapur in Charshahi union, Lakshmipur yesterday.
The deceased was one Didarul Alam, 40, general secretary of Jubo Dal’s Charshahi unit.
Sources said the gunfight took place at the village sometime around 1:30am.
Major Shahed of RAB 11 said: “The criminals opened fire while we were conducting a drive to detain some local hoodlums.”
In retaliation, RAB personnel fired back. The gunfight left Didar Bahini Chief Didarul Alam dead on the spot, he added.
Major Shahed said they had fired close to 60 rounds of ammunition while the criminals fired 40.
Lakshmipur sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Hossain said various cases, including ones pertaining to murder and extortion, were filed against Didarul in numerous police stations.
