Jamaat-Shibir go berserk in capital

Unruly Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir activists set several vehicles, including three private cars, ablaze in the capital’s Fakirapul, Rampura and Malibagh on Friday afternoon.

Witnesses said Jamaat-Shibir activists suddenly rushed into Motijheel after the Juma prayers and started setting vehicles on fire beofre fleeing the scene immediately.

Several drivers were seen howling over the rampage while the cars burned.

Officer-in-charge of Motijheel police station BM Forman Ali told the Dhaka Tribune: “Fire-fighters and police rushed to the scene immediately and tried to douse the blaze."

The agitated activists vandalised a number of roadside shops during the rampage.

Dhaka Tribune photographer Opu reports, a teenage boy named Shanto was injured in the rampage.

He was rushed into Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, Opu said quoting the doctors of the hospital.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-Shibir activists also set fire to two buses in Rampura and Malibagh areas.

Sources said Jamaat-Shibir members vandalised the shops on both sides of the street and set fire to buses.

Rampura police station Sub-Inspector Dipayan confirmed the incident to the Dhaka Tribune.

Police said they had detained several people in connection to the incident.
