Rape accused sub-inspector closed

Additional Superintendent of Police Faruque Hossain said: “Action was taken against the Sub-inspector Ataur Rahman of Siddhirganj police station on Saturday morning for negligence of duty.” On Wednesday night, police arrested a man for alleged robbery from Mijipara Dakkhipara village. Sub-Inspector Ataur Rahman allegedly demanded Tk25,000 from his two wives, promising that if they paid him the money, he would not torture their husband in remand. Later when they failed to pay the money the sub-inspector and his two sources Nazrul and Shuvo allegedly raped the women. Following reports published on the incident in the media, district police has formed a three-member probe committee headed by ASP Faruque. Faruque told Dhaka Tribune: “The committee did not get any evidence of the SI’s involvement with the rape.” Police sources Nazrul and Shuvo were the masterminds of the rape incident, he added. Siddhirganj Officer-in-Charge Sarafatullah said: “The women filed a case against Nazrul and Shuvo on Friday night and police have arrested the duo.” Medical examination of the victims was conducted at Narayanganj 100-bed Hospital yesterday morning. “We need to conduct a DNA test to identify the rapist,” said Dr Assaduzzaman, residential medical surgeon of the hospital. Mojidul Rahman, plaintiff’s lawyer, alleged that the police had pressured the victims to not press charges against the SI.
