An Awami League senior leader in Satkhira was hacked and slaughtered to death in front of hundreds of people at a market place in Debhata upazila on Thursday evening.
Abu Raihan, organising secretary of the upazila unit Awami League, was killed by the Jamaat-Shibir activists, local Awami League leaders claimed.
A gang of 20-25 people with sharp weapons chased Raihan when he was with some other men at Parulia Bazar in the upazila around 8pm, said SI.
Abdul Aziz of Debhata police station The upazila unit Awami League General Secretary Moniruzzaman Moni said Raihan went to the other side of the bazar for personal works and at that time some Jamaat-Shibir activists chased him.
“He took shelter at a shop, Momena Bastralay, and the gang began to hack him indiscriminately and slaughtered him, leaving him dead at the shop,” he said, and claimed that local Jamaat-Shibir activists threatened him recently.
Satkhira Police Super Molla Jahangir Hossain said he visited the spot and added that primarily the police assumed it was done by Jamaat activists.
The killers will be arrested any time soon, he expressed hopes.
However, no one was arrested till filing the report at 10:30pm.
