Members of Border Guard Bangladesh Friday morning seized about 2,000 kilograms of hilsa fish being smuggled out to India.
On receiving information, a team of BGB 26 battalion conducted a drive at Benapole Bazar and seized the fish worth about Tk1.7m, said Lieutenant Colonel Matiur Rahman.
BGB could not arrest anyone as the smugglers managed to escape sensing presence of border guards.
The seized hilsa was deposited to Benapole customs office.
A case was filed in this connection.
Earlier, members of BGB 23 battalion detained a total of 31 Bangladeshis while they were going to India through Putkhali frontier on Thursday night.
Of the arrestees, 13 are women, four children and 14 men.
Lieutenant Colonel Tayef-ul-Haque, commanding officer of 23 BGB battalion, said the BGB men picked up the Bangladeshis while they were illegally going to India with the help of traffickers.
“Sensing the presence of border guards, the traffickers fled the scene,” he added.
