Activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Dhaka University unit allegedly extorted admission-seeking students on Friday evening on the university campus.
The victims of the extortion, a group of students who came from Rajshahi to sit for the admission test for the D unit that was held earlier in the day, said a group of Chhatra League men stopped the two buses carrying the students.
They allegedly took away the keys of the vehicles and demanded Tk5,000 from each bus. The students were finally allowed to leave after paying a total of Tk2,500 to the men.
Sources said the Chhatra League activists who committed the extortion included Taky, Shah Alam, Sharif and Sarwar from the BCL’s Surja Sen Hall unit, Vice-President of Mohsin Hall unit Harun-ur-Rashid and SM Hall unit leader Niloy.
When contacted, Surja Sen Hall BCL unit President Mubarak Hossain said he had been informed of the incident, adding that appropriate measures will be taken after investigation.
Dhaka University Proctor Professor Dr Amjad Ali said he was yet to be informed of the incident, but assured that perpetrators will be punished after a probe is carried out.
